About Pieter Millard

Pieter Millard (born 9th August 1936) was a multifaceted individual whose life was shaped by both his deep faith and his exceptional artistic talent. A man with a strong sense of calling, Pieter pursued theological studies and served as a pastor for over 26 years with the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM). His dedication to ministry was only matched by his love for his family, including his wife Chrissie, with whom he had three children and six grandchildren.

Pieter’s passion for art was an integral part of his life, even as he balanced his pastoral duties. His creative journey began early, and he eventually became not only a respected artist but also an inspiring teacher. He developed his own art curriculum, which formed the foundation of the Pieter Millard Art School, where he taught a wide variety of styles, mediums, and techniques. Many of his students went on to become well-known South African artists, a testament to his skill as a teacher and his ability to inspire creativity in others.

In addition to teaching, Pieter supported himself part-time through his art while pioneering a children’s ministry, blending his creative and spiritual passions. In 1981, he made the decision to focus on his art full-time, quickly establishing himself as a professional artist. His work, which evolved over the years, began to showcase more vibrant colors and a shift toward expressionism, reflecting his deepening emotional and spiritual engagement with the world.

Pieter’s talent and passion for painting led him to travel extensively, including visits to Europe and America, where he painted and sold numerous works. His art became a bridge between cultures, with his pieces resonating with international audiences as well as local collectors.

Beyond his personal success as an artist, Pieter’s legacy also lies in the art community he fostered. His daughter, Ina Eksteen (née Millard), has continued his work by carrying forward the legacy of the Pieter Millard Art School, nurturing the next generation of artists. His son, Pieter Millard, and his other daughter, Lynette van Schalkwyk, have each contributed to the art world through their Art Galleries in Gauteng, ensuring that Pieter’s artistic influence and vision continue to thrive. 2 of his Grandchildren is involved in the Art Galleries.

Pieter was not only known for his art but also for his deep love for his faith and his country. His willingness to share his knowledge and life experiences made him a beloved figure in both his personal and professional circles.

Sadly, Pieter Millard passed away on 24th January 2017, but his creative and spiritual legacy lives on through his family, students, and the countless people whose lives he touched with his art and his faith. His contributions to the South African art world and his profound impact on the lives of others remain a testament to his passion, generosity, and vision.
