Kobus van Schalkwyk, born in January 1961, hails from the West Rand in Gauteng. With a strong academic background, he studied anthropology and psychology at RAU, later earning a master’s degree in anthropology. While at university, painting became a passionate hobby, eventually growing into a lifelong career.

Kobus held his first exhibition at the Carlton Hotel in 1982 and has since showcased his work across South Africa. In 1983, he began offering art lessons, sharing his expertise and nurturing new talent. By 1990, he opened his first gallery in the Florida Centre, solidifying his place in the South African art scene.

Inspired by the charm of the Overberg region in the Western Cape, Kobus frequently visits towns like Struisbaai, Arniston, Napier, and Hermanus. These idyllic locations feature prominently in his art, capturing their beauty and spirit with vivid detail. His work reflects his love for South Africa’s diverse landscapes and its unique character.
